Providence routed by Marquette, 87-66

The Providence Friars saw their season come to an end in an 87-66 loss to the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Providence trailed by 13 at halftime and never threatened Marquette, who likely locked up an NCAA bid with the win.

The only way the Friars were getting into the NCAA tournament was to win the Big East tournament.

Vincent Council scored 21 points to lead Providence while Marshon Brooks added 20. (Read More…)

Providence can’t slow down Connecticut, 75-57

The Providence Friars continued their Big East struggles in a 75-57 loss to the Connecticut Huskies.

Providence trailed by just three points at halftime but then saw the Huskies slowly pull away in the second half.

Guard Marshon Brooks, the leading scorer in the Big East conference, scored 25 points in a losing effort.

If the Friars could just find someone to give Brooks some help and shoulder the load, they would be a much better basketball team. (Read More…)

Providence edged by Georgetown, 83-81

The Providence Friars pushed the Georgetown Hoyas to the brink but came up short in an 83-81 loss.

Marshon Brooks scored 43 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Providence, but turned the ball over on the final possession of the game.

It’s hard to blame Brooks for the last possession given that he single-handledly kept the Friars in the game.

John Thompson III put several different people on Brooks throughout the game, but none of them could slow him down. (Read More…)

Providence falls to West Virginia, 88-74

The Providence Friars were little match for the No. 6 West Virginia Mountaineers in an 88-74 loss.

Providence caught West Virginia at a bad time, as they were coming off of two consecutive losses.

It was highly unlikely that they would drop three in a row, even if they had to play on the road.

The Friars lost control of the game in the first half when they allowed West Virginia to go on a 23-0 run.

The 18-point halftime deficit was simply way too much for the Friars to overcome against such a good basketball team.

Friars Can’t Hold Lead, Fall to Georgetown 79-70

The Providence Friars, facing the most daunting two weeks a college basketball team could imagine this year, got started on the wrong foot at home against Georgetown on Tuesday night, losing 79-70.

The Friars face the No. 3 (Syracuse), No. 4 (Villanova), No. 5 (West Virginia), and No. 7 (Georgetown) teams in the next two weeks, as the Big East’s supposed “down year” has once again turned the league into a battleground of some of the nation’s best teams.

“I think what that shows is the Big East, we’re not in a down year from last year,” Providence coach Keno Davis said. “I thought our team gave as good as an effort as we possibly could, and for them to come away with a win shows why they are the seventh team [AP] in the country.”

Providence actually hung with Georgetown for 30 minutes, holding a two-point lead over Georgetown at the half and extending it to 47-40 with 15 minutes left, but Georgetown got back to basics and snuffed out the Friars’ rally.

Georgetown’s Greg Monroe picked the Friars’ defense apart, going for a career-high 12 assists, along with 12 points and seven rebounds.

“If it turns out [this] was the easy game, I’ll eat my words,” Davis said. “But there’s no reason that team can’t go deep in the NCAA tournament. I hope they do.”

Friars blitz No. 19 Huskies

The Providence Friars scored an upset at home on Wednesday night, overwhelming the No. 19 Connecticut Huskies 81-66 behind a dominant 23-point, 14-rebound performance from Jamine Peterson.

The Huskies actually led by 10 points in the first half, but the Friars fought back to grab a one-point lead at the break. The teams traded leads early on in the second half before Providence seized control with a 14-0 run, eight of them by Peterson. The performance by UConn was a stark contrast to the one it put on last weekend against top-ranked Texas, whom the Huskies upset at home with a sparkling second half.

Sharaud Curry shot just 33 percent from the field but was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line en route to 18 points for the Friars, who won despite going 5 of 24 from beyond the arc. A 4 of 18 performance by the Huskies certainly helped make that possible.

The win actually puts Providence (4-4) ahead of UConn (3-4) in the Big East standings, an oddity considering that the Huskies are ranked and the Friars are not. If this game is any illustration, neither team belongs among the nation’s top 25.
